What is Journal Jar?
Life is full of moments worth preserving and remembering. Journal Jar is an app that helps you capture the meaningful experiences of your life. You can create entries for special moments, add photos, rate their significance, and track your mood — all in one place. Journal Jar also helps you revisit the past. The app will remind you of your moments from time to time, for example on an anniversary. You can organize your moments into collections and even maintain shared collections with friends or family.
Which platforms is Journal Jar available on?
Journal Jar is currently available for iOS. An Android version is planned for a later release.
Is Journal Jar free to use?
Yes! Journal Jar is free to download and use. The core features — creating entries, organizing collections, and sharing with others — are all included at no cost. A Premium subscription is required for the full feature set.
What does Journal Jar Premium include?
Journal Jar Premium unlocks the ability to attach photos to your journal entries, bringing your memories to life with images. Additionally, with a Premium subscription there is no limit on the number of collections you can create.
What are collections?
Collections let you organize your moments into different areas of your life. For example, you could have collections for travel, family, work, hobbies, or any other category that matters to you.
Can I share collections with others?
Yes! You can invite other people to shared collections so you can capture moments together. This is great for families, friend groups, or teams who want to document shared experiences.
Do all members of a shared collection need a Premium subscription to add photos?
No! As long as one member of the shared collection has a Premium subscription, all other members can also add photos to their entries in that collection.
Is my data private and secure?
Data security has been a top priority from the very beginning of Journal Jar's development. Your data is stored exclusively on servers in the European Union (Germany) and is subject to GDPR regulations. Data transmission between the app and our servers is encrypted, and every new collection is end-to-end encrypted by default — so your moments are protected before they ever leave your device. What is end-to-end encryption, and is it on by default?
End-to-end encryption (E2EE) means the content of your moments is encrypted on your device before it is sent to our servers, and only you (and the people you share a collection with) hold the keys to decrypt it. Not even we, the developers, can read your encrypted entries.
Every new collection you create in Journal Jar is end-to-end encrypted by default. When you create a collection you can choose to disable encryption for that one collection if you have a reason to, but the default is always on. This choice cannot be changed later.

Do I need iCloud Keychain for end-to-end encryption?
Yes — your private key is stored in iCloud Keychain, and that's what lets a new device read your encrypted entries after you sign in. If iCloud Keychain sync is turned off and your device is lost, replaced, or reset, the key disappears with it. Since we never have a copy of your private key, we cannot recover the encrypted content for you.
We recommend keeping iCloud Keychain sync enabled while you use end-to-end encrypted collections. For more details, see our End-to-End Encryption page.
Can I export my data or delete my account?
Yes. You can delete your account and all associated data at any time within the app. All data will be irreversibly deleted after a short safety period. You can also export and download your data at any time, even without a Premium subscription.
What happens to my photos if I cancel Premium?
Your previously uploaded photos will remain intact and visible. However, after cancellation you will not be able to add new photos to entries until you resubscribe to Premium.
